What are O rings?

An o ring is a mechanical gasket made from a circular loop of rubber.

They are incredibly simple yet effective, and offer a brilliant solution for sealing between mating surfaces and the fluids or steams within an appliance.

The O rings we offer online and supply to businesses throughout the country are mass produced and are available in the standard ‘BS’ sizes, ranging from BS9001 to BS932.

These brilliant gaskets are arguably one of the most recognisable seals within a huge number of industries and the sheer number of sizes available (see size chart below) means there is a solution for practically any job.

The difference between o rings and flat washers

These gaskets differ from flat washers in that they are measured from their internal diameter (i/d) as well as cross section (c/s). By contrast, a washer size is obtained by taking measurements from the internal diameter, outside diameter and thickness. There are differences in appearance, too. Whereas a washer has a flat appearance, an o ring is formed into an easily identifiable loop.

The benefits and common uses of o rings

Easy to install and reliable, o rings are malleable in their nature. This means they can be slightly compressed between mating surfaces to obtain a perfect seal and proves significantly valuable where the mating surface has slight imperfections, because it allows the rubber to compress and fill any gaps that are present.

Commonly found in pump shafts, aerospace equipment, gardening pumps and hydraulic cylinder pistons, o rings lend themselves to a wide range of applications. Our rubber o rings come in a variety of shore hardness ratings from 40sh right through to 90sh.

EPDM O Rings

Great for hot and cold water, steam and grease-laden applications. These gaskets are low cost and, with certain grades of EPDM, available for use in applications where temperatures exceed 180 degrees.

FKM O Rings

Great for oil and grease-laden applications. These gaskets offer good resistance to ozone, ageing and are low gas permeable with great temperature prevail.

Nitrile O Rings

These gaskets are perfect for grease, oils and lubricants due to their fantastic mechanical properties. Low cost, flexible at low temperatures, but equally capable of dealing with temperatures of 80 degrees on average.
