Polyethylene (PE) is made from polymerised ethylene. RH Nuttall Limited supply polyethylene washers, polythene gaskets, polyethylene seals, and polyethylene strip. Polyethylene is normally divided up into two different material types, HDPE (High Density) and LDPE (Low Density).

Polyethylene is one of the most commonly used thermoplastic material mainly due to a combination of its strong properties and its relative cheapness. Furthermore, both LDPE and HDPE have a good impact resistance. Both variants also have a low friction coefficient, and good electrical and abrasion resistance.

RH Nuttall Limited are able to offer polyethylene washers, gaskets, seals, and strip in an opaque white colour. HDPE is available in white or black colours. Adhesive backing can be applied to either variant. LDPE sheet and HDPE sheet are readily available to buy from stock in most common thicknesses.

Polyethylene is a non-hygroscopic material which is most commonly used in water tank and piping assembly applications. Due to its good electrical properties it also makes it suitable in a variety of electrical insulation applications.

General Characteristics

  • Cheap and reliable – Polyethylene is one of the most cheap thermoplastic materials currently available, but still able to suit a multitude of applications due to its properties.
  • Good electrical properties – Polyethylene is commonly used for electrical insulations.
  • Non-hygroscopic – Polyethylene doesn’t absorb water and therefore is most suited for applications within the plumbing trade.
  • Weathering – Polyethylene is affected by sunlight and may go brittle or crack over a long duration. UV stabilisers can be added to prevent this from happening.
