Cork Gaskets

At RH Nuttall we manufacture cork gaskets from simple one-off batches, to multi-thousand runs. Believe it or not, cork is still widely used throughout the gasket industry due to its outstanding sealing and flexible properties. Available in a natural resin bonded state, or more bespoke formats with base binders such as neoprene or nitrile added, cork is a cheap, waterproof and reliable material to select for sealing in applications such as oil sumps or street furniture.

Most people know cork material from the sealing of bottles of wine. This is due to the superb airtight and waterproof seal it creates. Our cork gaskets are predominantly supplied into the automotive, construction and street furniture trades for the same purposes. The main criteria for any choice of gasket material is to determine the application, and what substances are coming in contact with the gasket. Cork being a cheap, flexible, lightweight and a waterproof material creates a perfect seal in outdoor lighting for example. It also is heavily utilised in cars’ sumps where oil is to be sealed against, creating a long-term solution to leakage and seepage.

Being a nonabrasive and aesthetically pleasing base material, our production has also seen a rise in more modern-day household requests through the manufacture of coasters, notice boards, sound deadening pads and even fashion accessories for shoes and handbags.

Cork is a great choice of base material for sound deadening, and is used extensively under compressors, or heavy-duty pumps to prevent excess noise levels. Our range of cork gaskets have a closed cell structure, thus absorbing the noise from reverberation of heavy plant machinery.

Grades of cork gaskets

Depending on your application, our cork gaskets can be tailor-made to your requirements. As cork lends itself to a myriad of different uses it is important to determine what is being sealed against. Below is a selection of grades we are able to supply:

Resin bonded cork gaskets – these are lightweight, with no synthetic binder. A cheap and flexible material choice and often found on ads or notice boards for aesthetic purposes. This grade possesses less strength and durability than a boned variant and is more of a light brown colour throughout.

Nitrile  cork gaskets – a large proportion of our cork gaskets are manufactured with a binding ingredient, in this case nitrile rubber (NBR). The appearance of this grade is different to the resin bonded one, with it portraying a speckled appearance of a mixture of cork and nitrile rubber due to the amalgamation of both products. Adding nitrile rubber into the cell structure enables these cork gaskets to be used where heat is apparent and ensures a critical sealing point. These gaskets are often used for sealing against oils and chemicals. Please ask a member of our sales team for more information.

Neoprene bonded cork gaskets – at RH Nuttall we also have a large-scale demand for neoprene bonded cork gaskets. This time, neoprene rubber (CR) is added to the cork mix, thereby lending itself to applications where the sealing of water is critical. Again, the appearance of this grade is different to the resin bonded one, with it portraying a speckled appearance of a mixture of cork and neoprene rubber due to the amalgamation of both products. Adding neoprene rubber into the cell structure allows sealing in greater temperature applications as well as enhancing the durability of the gasket when water and weather conditions are of critical importance.  These gaskets are often used for sealing against water, and normally used externally in their application. Thicknesses of cork gaskets

Our range of cork gaskets are supplied in a multitude of different thicknesses depending on the grade required, and on the application you have in mind. Common thicknesses we manufacture include 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, and 6mm. Most of these thicknesses are held in stock for immediate manufacture. It is important to make the right choice when selecting a thickness of cork gasket, for it is this and the compression that will determine the accuracy of seal on any application. Self-adhesive cork gaskets

RH Nuttall can manufacture almost all grades of cork gaskets with an adhesive backing placed on the reverse side. This allows for greater accuracy in application when used as a third hand fixing aid. Both medium tack and high tack adhesive backings are readily available from stock and can be applied to the cork base material before being die cut. Self-adhesive cork gaskets can be supplied in individual format or kiss cut in coil for ease of removal and assembly speed. Please ask a member of our sales team for more information.
